How to Thread and Use a D-Ring Yoga Strap

by LumaHvn 14 Aug 2026

A D-ring strap is simple once it is threaded correctly. The two metal rings create an adjustable buckle, letting you form a loop for the foot or keep the strap open for two-handed stretches.

This guide uses the LumaHvn® 6 ft Cotton-Blend Yoga Strap with Metal D-Ring. Its six-foot length works well for everyday yoga and mobility practice without taking up much space in a mat bag.

Step-by-step threading of a metal D-ring yoga strap
Pass the loose end through both rings, then back through one ring to lock the loop.

How to thread the buckle

  1. Hold both D-rings together.
  2. Feed the loose end through both rings.
  3. Separate the rings and pass the loose end back over the first ring and under the second.
  4. Pull the strap flat and test the loop with light tension.

The strap should lie flat without twisting. To resize the loop, release tension first and slide the fabric through the rings.

1. Seated forward fold

Sit tall with one or both legs extended. Place the loop around the forefoot and hold the strap with both hands. Hinge forward from the hips while keeping your spine long. The strap helps you maintain contact without rounding just to reach your toes.

Seated stretch using a pink D-ring yoga strap
Use the loop as a reach extender rather than pulling the body forward.

2. Bound-hand shoulder stretch

Hold one end overhead and let the strap fall behind your back. Reach the other hand up from below and take the strap. Walk the hands closer only while both shoulders stay comfortable.

3. Reclined leg stretch

Lie on your back, place the loop around one foot, and lift the leg. Keep a soft bend in the knee and steady tension in both hands.

4. Supported chest opener

Hold the strap behind your hips with your hands wider than shoulder width. Gently draw the hands away from the body while keeping the ribs stacked over the pelvis.

Six-foot D-ring yoga strap dimensions and woven texture
A flat woven strap should remain smooth through the buckle and across the foot.

Care and safety

Check the stitching and rings before use. Hand wash according to the care directions and allow the strap to dry fully before rolling it. Do not use it for suspension, climbing, or any purpose that requires a weight-rated strap.
